It’s World Environment Day; what are you prepared to do?

Environment Dayy

Research says, by 2050 there will be more trash in our oceans than fish. Think about that for a moment. The magnitude of it. Your knees may go weak at the thought, or maybe you hold your breath for a second. It’s okay to take a moment —  5th June is World Environment Day.

There’s a lot of dialogue about controlling single-use plastics in everyday life. Trash, it seems, is taking over the planet and we should be worried. Some countries have banned plastic bags, with many others charging a tax on their use. By now, everyone knows that a plastic bottle takes more than 450 years to decompose. So reuse or refuse is the message going out to the world today from all corners.

Our oceans choking on garbage is not the only problem. The world’s population at 7.5 billion means that there’s more demand on water resources. Growing wealth and incomes put further pressure on demand, exacerbating the water problem. In India alone, more than half the groundwater wells are depleting. We can’t just rely on governments to bring in policies. Some things are still in the hands of individuals willing to make some difference.

Want to make a real change? The answers are hidden in the very mundane.

Morning shower: Use a low-flow shower for a maximum of 10 minutes a day. You’ll find you can clean up just as well as you would with a high flow shower, but with much lesser water consumption within the same time. If you think you’re up for roughing it out a bit, switch to a bucket bath every alternate day.

Car wash: Replace that hose pipe with a bucket and mug. Bonus: you can get that retro car shine if you make all the right moves.

Leaks: Fix those leaky pipes. You could save litres of water every time you act promptly and fix those taps and pipes without delaying it to the next day or waiting for the weekend.

Close taps: Shut the water off when your hands are busy brushing, shaving or scrubbing dishes. Leaving the taps running when you aren’t using the water is costing dearly.

Laundry: Wash full loads every time you use the washing machine. Every time you use the machine, you consume water. Consolidate your washes to save more and get more done with less.
